Hi all,

So we have a little catching up to do here—these chapters are too relevant to skip over (sorry).

Please read chapters 11,12 & 14 of your book. These chapters cover editorial design and European Emigre’s in the US, WW2 propaganda, and the Swiss Style/International Style post WW2.

How does the influx of European designers affect the design aesthetic of the US “Commercial Artist’s”? In what way does traditional American graphic design begin to evolve into a more European style? How was graphic design used during the second world war? And begin to talk about the ideological shift in approaching a design project, culminating in the “Swiss Style”.

Please reference examples from the book chapters. Add examples from the lectures, if you wish.

Deadline is Sunday at midnight!

Hi all,

As mentioned in class, chapter 6 is the reading this weekend.

By now, you should have a good handle on the Bauhaus style, and how influential the Bauhaus was in terms of approaching a design problem, intended for mass production.

What was the Bauhaus’ impact on society (regional, national, international), and how would it impact the design community? Use examples from the book, and include any references from the weeks lectures.

Deadline is Sunday at midnight.

Hi all,

Please read chapters 5 and 7 from your book. These are the chapters covering the De Stijl & Russian Constructivist movements. How were the movements different/similar? What role did the unstable political arena play in the evolution of each movement? Why was geometric abstraction such a popular method of visual communication? Please refer to examples from the book, as well as the lectures (if you wish). I hope you find the reading to be an in-depth, succinct extension of what we have covered in class this week.

As I’m a tad late on this one, you can have until Sunday at midnight!

Please read chapters 4 and 9 in your book. These are chapters on Italian Futurism and French Art Deco. Are there obvious similarities and differences between the two movements/styles? Use examples from the book and tie in anything from the class content.
